Founded in 2018, midnight & indigo is a literary magazine dedicated to short fiction and narrative essays written exclusively by Black women writers. We exist to make a meaningful contribution to the Black literary tradition and provide a space to elevate our stories and voices. In addition to its bi-annual print magazine, midnight & indigo publishes stories (under 2000 words) online. We are Black and woman-owned.

Ianna A. Small | Founder & Editor in Chief
Ianna is the founder of midnight & indigo Publishing and creator of midnight & indigo, a literary platform dedicated to short stories and narrative essays by Black women writers. m&i is her love letter to Black women like herself, who long to reach the pinnacle of their purpose. As the executive editor of midnight & indigo, she oversees editorial and creative direction for the digital and print platforms. A media marketing executive, Ms. Small also has 20+ years of experience developing partnerships, distribution, and content marketing initiatives for entertainment brands including BET, Disney Channel, ESPN, ABC, FX, VH1, MTV, HOT97, and more.
An avid fan of Black and South Asian literature, Korean horror, and all things Jesus + The Golden Girls + Michelle Obama + cultural food documentaries, she dreams of one day running midnight & indigo from a lounge chair overlooking the archipelagos of her happy place, Santorini.
Ms. Small is a proud graduate of Syracuse University and active member of ACES: The Society for Editing and the EFA (Editorial Freelancers Organization). She is a granddaughter to Irma, daughter to Nadia, and mother of Jalen Anthony, who is simply: her reason.
